Because pigeons naturally fly back to their homes, they make excellent message bearers. The Greeks and Romans used them, and it’s likely the ancient Persians did as well. A pigeon would be transported away from its home and held until a message needed to be sent, then that tiny message would be affixed and the bird released to fly home.
